NUCHAL SCAN 8 MAY

Had our appointment with the midwife at Central Clinic yesterday. When I met the midwife last week, I had told her we would want a Nuchal Scan to check for Pataus Syndrome. She didn't see a problem and said she would do the referral letter.

At the appointment we went through all the various paperwork - have you ever been in a mental asylum, any allergies, any drug use, is this your first pregnancy? Once this was all done, she went and got the doctor to go over the scan details. The doctor, after opening the folder of notes, started to explain how there was only a 1% chance of the baby having Pataus, I said, yes if it was a natural conception. Well reading you letter she said, blah blah blah 1%, blah blah blah, oh 10% if fertility treatment..... Well, anyway, having discussed it with the Genetics Department the chances of seeing it in a Nuchal Scan are so slim, she said, that's not really what Nuchal Scans are for, they are for diagnosing Downs Syndrome. I know, I said, but my friend had hers and the doctor told her, we're looking for Downs, something else, something else and Pataus. She specifically remembered the Pataus for me. Oh, said the doctor, your really better with an amnio later on, first trimester scans are rare. I know I said, but the information I got, was that after 12 weeks, you can get a better picture, and check for the Pataus. The doc said, you can do Nuchal Scans from 10 to 14 weeks, I wanted to argue that you can only do them until 13 wks 6 days, but thought better of it....

Anyway, I think she realised I wasn't going to budge, so she told the midwife to book a scan for next week - too early, I was thinking - and went off to phone genetics again. She came back about 15 minutes later, patted me on the shoulder and said, you were right. HALLELUJAH!!! She then told the midwife to change the scan date to a week later and said she would see us there. She even made the appointment her last of the morning, so that if she had any difficulty we could slip into the afternoons appointments.

WE SAW OUR WEE BEAN!!!

Had our scan (internal) on Thursday - apologies for the late update - at the GRI. My birthday was on Friday, so thankfully, I can claim the best birthday present ever!!

At first the nurse couldn't find anything and tried adding more gel to the condom and probe - yeuch! Still nothing, so the other nurse went off to get the head consultant - same one that done my ET. She said he can be a wee bit rougher (Christ, don't I know it), but can find the baby no problem.

Seriously - he took hold of the probe, tilted it a little, and there was our wee bean!! Apparently there was a heartbeat, we couldn't see it, but to be honest, just so happy to take away our wee black and white pic of our wee baby - now proudly displayed on DH's bed side table.

Quick update on Paulina and Jenny. Paulina had her beautiful wee twins, boy 6lbs1 and wee girl 4lbs11. Jenny had her wee girl at 31wks + 6, 4lbs exactly, they're both still in hospital, baby in the nursery and Jenny has really high bp, so I'm going in to see them on Tuesday.

Mary's IUI failed so she's onto # 3 now. Please let it work?!?

STILL SCARED TO BELIEVE IT'S TRUE!!

Haven't been on to post, cos I still can't quite believe it's true!! Only 10 days until the scan, so I think once I know everything is ok, I'll be able to relax a little.

Been stuck with my feet up longer than I expected - tripped and tore a ligament in my foot, so haven't been able to walk properly for a week!

Just been to the maternity to visit Jenny, she's had high blood pressure and protein in her urine, so was admitted last week in case they had to do an emergency c section. So far they have managed to reduce her bp, but are still monitoring her urine. She's just coming up to 31 weeks, so looks like she'll be in there until she gives birth.

Paulina has been admitted too, her c section is tomorrow, so Mary & I will visit on Wednesday afternoon, and see how the twinnies are, and stick our heads round Jenny's door too.

Fingers crossed for Mary, this is week two of her 2ww with IUI # 2!!
